Image quality is excellent on Sony APS-C cameras. There is no OSS (In lens image stabilisation), but that’s not really an issue for photography or if you are using a camera body with IBIS (in camera stabilisation). The image is shape edge-to-edge, and clean even at f2.8. There is little to complain about for the price, or the form factor. There are better lenses on the market, but you would need to pay twice as much for a marginal improvement in image quality.Auto focus is fast, very fast, almost instant most of the time. However, manual focus is not that good. The focus ring is not actually attached to anything, it simply instructs the motor to focus based on your input. Which means there is a slight delay when using manual focus. Also the feeling of manual focus is weird. This lens is manual zoom only, which is annoying. But zoom is very controllable, and the feel of the zoom ring is good.If you are planning to put this Len on an a6000 series camera, you’ll love it. However, do not put this on a a7 or a9 series camera as it designed for the smaller APS-C sensor and doesn’t work with full frame sensors. If you are planning to use this lens on a gimbal such as the Ronin SC with an a6000 camera, be prepared to buy 150g of counter weights, and bracket to put them on and a raiser. Otherwise you simply won’t be able to balance the lens on the gimbal.

The photo from this lens is very very good. I sold all my primes and zooms and only have this now. It covers all that I need and more! If price isn’t a concern just go for it

To be clear, this is a cost prohibitive lens. However, the quality of the photos this lens produces are really good across all zoom lengths and aperture stops. I use this lens on an a-6000 and for years I only used the kit lenses that came with the camera and an additional ultra-wide Rokinon lens. The photos were always good and I was always pleased. But the SEL1655G unlocked the potential of my camera by producing extremely sharp photos with great colors (my camera doesnt have image stabilization so I don’t use it for video). Is it worth it? It’s certainly cheaper to buy separate fixed length focal lenses but that means carrying lots of lenses with you and switching between them. This lens is a great all-in one that produces photos that stand up to some of the best lenses in the market. Personally, the convenience of taking only one lens with me combined with the extremely high image quality justifies the purchase. If you can afford it… treat yourself!

Great Lens, price dropped $100, only way to get current price is to send it back and reorder.

I picked up this lens because I wanted a fast, general purpose zoom that was sharp for my APS-C Sony camera. I had owned the 16-50 3.5-5.6 kit lens since purchasing the a6300 2 years ago and wasn’t happy with its performance in photography. This lens performs far greater than the kit lens that I replaced it with. I have even tested this G lens at 30mm vs the Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime lens, and I have come to the conclusion that they are similar enough in sharpness that I cannot really tell the difference. I have used the lens for recording basketball and wrestling at my local high school as well as taking pictures of the players in action (see attached photos). The autofocus performed amazingly. It is way faster than any of the lenses that I own. The lens performs amazingly in every scenario I put it in. It has made the experience with my camera leaps and bounds better. It has a high price tag, but that is simply what you have to dish out to get the experience it gives. If one can budget for this lens, and is happy with what an APS-C sensor gives them, I say with great confidence, get it!

I’ve been using a Sony a6300 for several years with prime lenses (16mm and 30mm) from Sigma as well as the Sony SELP16-50 kit lens. From the beginning, I’ve been on the lookout for a quality zoom that’s sharper and brighter and more durable than the kit lens. In the meantime, I’ve been relying on the primes for both street and portrait photography. The new Sony 16-55G with its constant f/2.8 is on paper exactly what I needed, although it comes at a stomach churning price. I’ve been using it daily now for about three weeks and am overall quite satisfied. The Sony 16-55G is really solid and easy to use. The focusing is so fast you don’t notice it. The images are sharp even at f/2.8, although it’s not quite as sharp as my Sigma prime lenses, nor is the bokeh at f/2.8 as nice as what the Sigmas can do at f/1.4. The Sony 16-55G lens is relatively light given all the glass, but it still makes my a6300 camera front heavy. It feels really rugged compared to the little kit lens, which is easily damaged. (I’ve broken the zoom mechanism on two kit lenses in the past couple years from banging them against something.) Of course, you can buy almost 10 kit lenses for the price of this new Sony 16-55G. And the steep price of the Sony 16-55G might leave you second guessing. Do you really want to invest well over $1,000 in a lens for an APSC camera? I feel like I had no choice but to bite the bullet, but I’m still grappling with that question.

Super sharp lens. Good focal length for always on my camera.Expensive for sure, but a great lens.

Not wide enough angle for my liking. Infact my Canon seemed a wider angle at the same range. Over priced as Sony always is, and not as good. Shame.

This is a superb lens. Compact, and razor sharp. An equivalent to the popular 24-70 f/4 on a full frame but paired with something like a6000 gives you a really nice compact tool. Shame it is so expensive. But that is the story with all sony G lenses: superb quality for a really high price.
