What a pleasant surprise!I bought this lens to replace my standard set of 18-105 + 70-300 as a “vacation lens”. The fact is, I’ve never gone back to the Nikkor for the “walk-arounds.” Tamron B016 is just a little bit heavier and physically longer than the all-plastic 18-105 Nikkor (zoom creep and falling to pieces) and it has a little bit less contrast than Nikkors; however, it is worth upgrading to just for the wide end, and on top of that you get a decent 450mm (FX equivalent) tele in an instant!Of course, there are drawbacks to this lens: distortion at the wide end, lateral CA on the long end (purple/green fringing in the corners) and it is a ‘varifocal’ lens (@ 6m/20ft the “300” is more like 240mm); BUT, there aren’t lenses without these compromises and most have lesser range, are more expensive (Nikkor 18-300 ~33% more), heavier, don’t have the handling properties (instant focus override, distance indicator and zoom feel), and/or are more “plasticky” etc. Please see the attached pictures:Cathedral 16mm@3200ISO, Berries 70@800, Spitfire 165@400 and Boat 300@100Recommended!Note: this lens is selling in the US for 30% more than in Canada!
