    Best lens I’ve ever bought.

Had to wait a long time to arrive.. Sent as cheaply as possible.. Tracking showed left for two weeks standing still in DHL’s warehouse in Germany.. Didn’t even have to sign for receipt of package.. I had nothing but problems with this lens from the start.. I’m assuming my lens is faulty.. When working incredibly sharp.. On the first day would not focus unless I focused elsewhere and recomposed often missing the subject I was trying to photograph.. Subsequently improved.. Birds in flight often miss focused against the sky and shots with a contrasting background was a waste of time.. Mark Smith the American wildlife photographer had the same issues with flight photography and sent it back.. My lens is in for repair.. This seller is from Germany and lens is sold with a 5 year warranty not valid in the UK.. For a lens in this price bracket a miserly one year guarantee is poor value..

This lens is amazing, super light and super sharp. I was very lucky to get one of these lenses due to the demand being so high. I did some comparative shots to the 80-400, 200-500, sigma 150-600 and sigma 500 f4 and the difference in sharpness was significantly better when using this lens even wide open. The only thing that would make this lens better was if it was an f4 or lower and for some reason I struggle to get the lens hood to fit in reverse. I don’t think it’s that expensive for what you get, a light and super sharp ultra zoom. I’ve taken it to Tanzania on safari and didn’t notice much difference in sharpness compared to the 300 f2.8 which says quite a lot.

Bought this hoping for 1050mm on D500. Already have 200-500 and others. Too new to have any reviews of 500pf with TC 1.4 III. Consider this the first one. Doesn’t play well with TC, same as 200-500. Sharpness is good to excellent without TC, but with is obviously less clear. Maybe the 600 pf will do it when it comes out? My credentials; over 130 images published in last 4 years, published 7 landscapes books, many awards and pieces in Museums. Considered one of the best Landscape and Wildlife photographers on the East Coast.

  5. ACTY

This lens seems to be the best one I have ever used with superior sharpness and speed. Awesome indeed!

  6. Anil Ozcagli

Nikon nailed it with this lens, super fast focusing, very well built, sturdy yet lightweight, using a Teleconverter is still up in the air, but very happy with the crisp images by itself!

  7. Véronique M.

The Nikon 500mm PF lens is easily carried on my D850 and is great for lots of types of photography; FOR, safari parks, zoos, wildlife, birds on branches and other locations that do not involve flying unless birds are very big, swans, herons, cormorants, you get the idea, as long as it is Bright AND Sunny you will be able to use lens for BIF, and focus tracking and focus lock will be alright, however BIF work is only possible if using suitable body, when using my D500, lens does a good job, but when using my D850 it is not as good. When using 1.4 TC, focus is unable to lock on moving birds, but is ok on subjects that are not moving ( when on tripod, only} So to round up all in all, it is a very useful lens for many occasions, however it is nowhere near as good as my 300mm F2.8 monster of a lens which is , in a word, perfect as it should be, after all the 300mm is a professional lens and costs almost six grand, The Nikon 500mm PF is about half the weight, And around half the price.

Lens is nice and easy to use handheld, especially with fast moving subjects I could easily keep the camera up and ready for hours on end and the image quality doesn’t seem to have been compromised at the expense of lightness.
