This speaker is good but, the volume is so low it only becomes loud enough on volume setting 8 or 9 which is a shame. Battery life is fantastic as is the sound quality, when turned up. Update,I have just received the Marshall Tufton, now this speaker is far superior to the Stockwell 2, The TUFTON is awesome, sound quality superb battery life fantastic, rugged, heavy but still portable the Stockwell 2 is good but lacks the wow factor in terms of sound, this a verified purchase review. I have returned the Stockwell 2 because the tufton is so good.

The sound quality of the Tufton is excellent and despite its comparatively small size, is easily capable of filling a hall. Plenty of bass without it being overwhelming. My wife leads exercise classes for older people and has found the Tufton much lighter and easier to carry around than the QTX unit she was using. Its battery power means that its positioning is not dependent on where power sockets are in the various halls she uses, there is no trailing cable hazard and there’s no cable reel to lug around. Power and bass is more than adequate for her audience.Sounds ideal but it does have one drawback – there’s no microphone input. Even if you have a compatible (wireless) mic amp to plug into the aux socket and you use bluetooth for music, the two inputs can’t be mixed – it is strictly one or the other.I know it is not marketed for this kind of use but I can’t help feel that Marshall are missing a trick here – it would make a great portable PA.Some of the halls I give talks in have quite sophisticated PA systems but 9 times out of 10, there’s no-one available to get them set up or they are specifically excluded from use by third parties. Having the Tufton to hand would transform things.Anyway five stars for it as it meets its advertised spec very well. I just wish for the money that it could do a bit more.

I needed a speaker I could take anywhere – particularly outdoors or on holiday. I was particularly keen on the Bose sound core II- however it was a bit too beyond my budget. I came across the Marshall Emberton which looked the perfect size and build quality for my budget. Reviews were pretty good so went against my normal try before you buy and ordered. The sound quality is outstanding for its size- in my opinion equal to the bose at a lower price. Decent bass and volume and I would agree with other reviews that say it excels in the vocals. The build quality is solid and it looks fantastic wherever you put it. I particularly like the central rocker switch, which is responsive and quickly allows you to change tracks and volume with minimal fuss. The battery seems to last forever and the battery level indicator is a useful feature.Small criticism would be no aux input – although i bought it to be portable so unlikely ever to want to plug a device into it. Bluetooth range is ok – not fantastic I usually need to be in the same room to avoid any stuttering- I have come from using chromecast audio where range is not an issue- but less portable. I was surprised to read that despite it using Bluetooth 5.0 it uses an SBC codec rather than more recent AptX or AAC, which offer better latency and marginal improvement in sound quality. Not that I’ve noticed anything detrimental to the sound quality.Overall an outstanding portable speaker for the money!

I didn’t end up keeping this speaker and have actually been without it for quite some time now. I wrote an extremely long and detailed review and then wondered where i would put it. It was too long and detailed for ClickElectronics really. So I have decided to cut it down somewhat but still go into detail about the speaker. Still is very long so those wanting to know more about the sound, go into that rather than the issues further down. Most of my impressions on the sound are very good.I will start off with the negative that made me return it. There is unfortunately a lot of things that are not good about my experience. Now a lot of people will just use bluetooth and not the 3.5mm input. But when you spend this much on a blutooth speaker, I would consider it poor not to have the ability to connect devices this way. As when you have a speaker sound this good, it is always as good or better to use a cable rather than bluetooth so long as you find it practical enough. The issue is that the speaker always goes into what seems a sleep mode when a cable is connected to this input. It does this in under 2 seconds of no audio playing. Then often takes over a second to wake up again. This results in it virtually always skipping the beginning of tracks off. If they begin with lyrics, well you miss the first few words. This is an unacceptable flaw for a speaker of this price. I thought it was a fault with mine so I returned it and got another. It had the same issue. I also went into PC world to try their one on display and it is exactly the same. I am really surprised nobody else or the professional reviews have mentioned this. Not that many would use this speaker for audiobooks or radio, but it would basically be unusable via the 3.5mm input. Every time there is silence for over 2 seconds, you will almost certainly miss the next word or two. Really poor.No other blutooth speaker I have tested out in a store or have owned has had this problem. I contacted Marshall trying to explain just how much it would change my view on this speaker if they sorted it out. I just can’t accept it for such a premium speaker. It will be a simple fix, but would obviously cost them money to start producing them all and having to sort this out. They in the end did thank me for what I had found out, but it was at first quite difficult for them to believe what I was experiencing.I also tested the charging ability. Claiming it can charge at 12V 3A may be a bit of a stretch. With the correct PD charger, it can get close to 2A at 12V but no where near what it states. It also says it can charge a phone from the type c port at 5V 2A. From the picture of it charging my tablet, the voltage drops quite a bit even when it isn’t close to 2A. I feel if it reached the current it claims, the voltage would drop to a point where it wouldn’t charge your device correctly. It seems to do the job, but very slow.Yet more negatives is that with my replacement, the tweeter on the back must not have been sealed in place correctly. Whenever there was a lot of bass, you could hear air being forced in and out around it. Basically like port noise. This to me shows that there may be some inconsistency with build and quality control too, but I think this is not going to normally be the case as my first one sounded fine. In the end I returned both though.Onto the sound. It isn’t totally without issues here either but none are at all big, and if I try and ignore the other issues with the speaker, the sound is very impressive for the price and size of the speaker. Again, I will start with the areas that could be improved. This speaker has very impressive low end. Those saying it is lacking need to factor in just how small it is and not just how it sounds. It sounds massive for it’s size. I also don’t get the problem with volume being to quiet. You can’t expect a small speaker like this to be loud while maintaining a clean and accurate sound. This limits it nicely and never distorts. The problem is just how separate the low end is from the mid range. There is a hole in the middle effect. There is very little in the way of mid bass. It seems very boosted from around 55hz – 75hz and sounds incredible if the music being played just has bass at around these levels. If it goes beyond that, it can sound incredibly lacking. I find the bass dial always needs to be on full as it controls bass at around 100hz and if you turn it down, you get the low end and virtually nothing in the middle. If you use EQ on your input device, you can get it to sound brilliant though. But it could either do with the mid bass boosting or not so much weight on the low end. And if marshall had tuned it slightly differently (which would have been possible), it really could have been outstanding here.Something that I think is good is that is sounds pretty much the same from all angles, but there is unfortunately a negative effect that I think is related to this. As you have the left and right channels coming from the front and back, you get an odd echo effect. Even worse when against a wall. Many instruments sound very distant as if they are in some large hall and sound quite artificial at times. As a very critical listener, I was not a fan of this as it would have been avoidable at the expense of the sound coming from all directions. I don’t think this is such a disadvantage as the audio quality for the size is still more than acceptable. If it didn’t have the aux input problem and the 2nd purchase didn’t have an issue with the tweeter, this speaker would have been 4 stars, maybe 5 now the price has gone right down. But the input issue and faulty unit really makes me disappointed with this speaker on the whole. But don’t let this review put you off if you are a bluetooth only user, as in that case, I think it will likely be outstanding, especially at the price it is at now.The build of this speaker is the best thing about it. It is remarkably solid compared to most stuff these days. Got a good weight to it and the dials have a great rubber grip. I wouldn’t worry about this getting a bit wet or getting bumped about.Since I returned this speaker, I took a risk and went with something very different. The IKEA ENEBY 20. This is built nothing like as solid and not waterproof in any way. It also is a little bit bigger in every direction, which does make it seem pretty large in comparison. But what made me try this out was because of the reviews it was getting. And the fact that the speaker plus the battery for it is just £60. And I’m being honest here – it sounds better. With the expense of it not being as practical, the sound and price makes up for all of this. It doesn’t have stereo, but has no echo sound effect and not a hole in the middle between the midrange and bass either. You can make it better with EQ too.I would actually recommend the ENEBY 20 over the Stockwell II now. But can fully understand that the need for the small size and build can outweigh saving money for the other speaker. If you are after good sound though and value for money, there is not really any comparison. The ENEBY 20 has a dial like the Stockwell II which is pretty hard to find and also has bass and treble EQ built in though is harder to use.Very long but hope some of you find this review helpful as it seems I have had a very different experience to most.

  5. Mrs Suzanne McGregor

Outstanding sound for the size, but with a major flaw with the audio input

  6. Rm0 Dr Tj

    small and powerful speaker

  7. annalie

Nice bit of kit.!! If you’re into heavy music then this is what you need. I’ve played kyuss to slayer to sabbath.. the good thing is, you got treble and bass to mess around with.. compared with Bose minisoundlink 2 , which is an awesome all rounder, but, the Stockwell is just that little bit more. Loudness is very similar, not gonna blow ya mind, but loud enough!!! All depends what music you’re into, but , if ya like it heavy, it’s the way forward!!!

  8. Mhiara Mackenzie

It’s not loud enough try the TUFTON

  9. Gustavo Rua
