Quite a few reviewers talk about a steep learning curve. I think they are correct: I have just started the climb and there is one aspect of the lens that really bothers me. Exposure. As you can see from Canon’s T&S manuals (you find these on Canon’s website, when you look for these lenses), Automatic Exposure does not work when you tilt or shift the lens. If any of the Tilt and Shift settings for the lens are engaged, then your readings of the exposure will not be correct and the camera will be fooled into over- or underexposure. So, you have to decide exposure in manual mode, before you adjust the tilt and shifts regulations, and stick to those exposure values to get a correct exposure when you adjust the regulations. It’s not very practical and, with Photoshop offering all the functions that a T&S can offer, the investment in such an expensive lens can be questioned. (I did not know this when I bought the lens, but Photoshops also allows creating pictures with extreme depth of filed: you can do that by taking a few pictures with different focusing distances and stitching everything together in post production; converging lines canj also be retouched in post-production, but this is less likely to be new to you..)

This thing is a beauty. Being able to take some amazing pictures is so fun.

I’ll leave the specifications and amazing optical quality to the other reviewers. What I love about this lens is its ability to to pack a good portion of a view camera’s ability into a hand-holdable package. You can tilt the focal plane to nearly perpendicular to the film plane, shift the horizon all the way to the lower edge of the frame while maintaining straight verticals, and change the orientation of tilt to shift! If you get why those are great things, you need this lens.

Best lens I own…I shoot architecture and this is the king. Crazy sharp (as has been said many times here) and compared to the 17mm this thing is easy to focus. I own over a dozen L series lenses, all of which were purchased with a view towards their application in shooting buildings. This is the stalwart of the group; the one I’d never leave home without and the one that is used most frequently on every shoot. I’ll also note that this thing has taken a beating…I use it all the time..it’s been bumped and banged about a fair bit and still performs perfectly. Amazing piece of glass! I really can’t recommend this lens highly enough especially for folks considering shooting architecture / real estate on a professional basis. Beyond the strict formalism of conventional architectural photography I should also note that this lens is great fun to play with in more creative applications. With a little shift and some tilt to throw focus you can make some highly compelling stills and doubly compelling video..fun times. If I had to pick 1 lens for work and fun this would be it.

This is the one to get.Chances are some of you are like me and are already a Canon user, have already decided to buy a tilt shift lens, but are trying to decide which focal length to buy. If you can only buy one, this is it. I haven’t run into a situation where I needed a longer focal length tilt shift and I rarely wish I needed a wider angle. If you are trying to decide whether to buy the 16-35 or the TSE-24 and you primarily do landscape or architectural work, this is it. I use the 16-35 for weddings and such.I needed to learn how to use the lens but it wasn’t that hard. There are a lot of very smart and generous people in youtube land who have helped me…a lot.I almost always use a tripod with this lens and a geared head is now permanently attached to my tripod because of this lens. Yes, you will want a geared head if you use this more than a couple of times. You don’t NEED it, but you will want it.
