Having sold my Much loved Canon 10-22mm EFS lens a good few years ago when I moved up to a full frame 5D, I’ve been missing the ultra wide angle lens from my collection, my widest being the 24mm end of a 20-70 zoom. As it always the case in the bottomless pit that is photography, I finally took the plunge and chose this lens to reclaim that focal length! It’s very light for ‘L’ glass, but it delivers the goods as you would expect. It’s now paired with a 5DMKIII and works very well, and has opened up the UWA world for me again! It’s too short to be a walkabout lens for my tastes, but given it’s weight and size, it’s easy enough to carry around in the bag ‘just in case’ (although I do tend to leave the hood at home as it is very very wide and takes up a lot of space!).Obviously as a f/4 lens, it’s not the fastest, but it’s good enough, and when paired with the low level light performance on the 5DIII, it’s not an issue at all. Sharpness is as expected for ‘L’ glass zooms – great.

The images are a little soft for an L series lens but the focal range is very useful for scenes and tight quarters, especially when used on a full frame camera. Nice addition to my lens kit.

Just got this, and only took a few shots around the house. I must say… its a game changer. Great lens, shipping was quick. Im very satisfied with this. They even put a small personalized note inside.

Pretty happy with this lens. The glass seems to be pretty good quality. Love that this lens was available with higher f stop making it more affordable. I take mostly scenery shots so that works for me.

I like 40mm, just to set expectations on this review. So I really like the 17-40mm range to begin with. The lens works really well, is fast when operation both with auto-focus and manual focus. I haven’t had any issues yet and have been using it for a couple months now. I would highly recommend this lens for the quality, unless you need something faster than its very slow f/stop.

This lens is simply great. The only concern I had about it was the sharpness in the corners but being a landscape photographer and shooting mostly at F8 and up, I don’t have a single complaint. The zoom range is great, colours are fantastic and build quality is, well it is an L lens! I would definitely recommend for someone who has a full-frame camera. If you are shooting on a crop sensor, this would be more of a walkaround lens than wide angle.

This review relates to this lens on an APS-C sensor. Results on full-frame and film cameras may be different.17-40 is a fairly nice range as a standard zoom on APS-C cameras (like the EOS 300D, 350D, 400D, 20D and 30D). It equates to about 27-65mm as 35mm equivalent. The constant max aperture is also a nice feature, as is the robust build quality. Best of all, the 17-40 L delivers lovely contrast and colours and is very very sharp. These are certainly good things in a lens and I really like the way some images taken with this lens seem to have a vibrancy not found in lesser lenses. However, the lens also has its downsides which seems to get ignored by those with an L-lens fixation. For instance:- the lens is heavy, You really know you have it on the camera body. It certainly makes a 400D feel imbalanced. That’s not true with a 30D, but it’s still heavy.- f4 is not “fast”. Neither is it “slow”, but it doesn’t offer as much creative control as, say a Sigma 18-50 f2.8- the lens is very expensive when compared with other options like the Sigma 18-50 f2.8None of these may bother you as a consumer, but unless you need a wide-angle zoom for a full-frame and standard zoom for APS-C, I would consider other options also. There are faster, lighter and near-equal performing lenses out there for APS-C cameras for considerably less money. The main advantages the L has over the Sigma and Tamron alternatives are: the Canon name which holds its value better if you want to sell it on later and the Canon has the lovely USM mechanism, which means near-silent operation. Thankfully, it’s also less conspicuous than other L lenses as it’s not grey/white in appearance.I don’t know that digital cameras will necessarily revert to full-frame when sensor prices come down. After all, it’s possible to get 10MP on an APS-C frame without any detriment to image quality. 10MP really is enough and APS-C means that cameras and accessories can be that much smaller and lighter than full-frame equivalents. There’s no real advantage to full-frame unless you are a pro – and just because they used to use medium format cameras a few years ago didn’t mean the rest of us did also. It’s a very very good lens, but the extra-premium price is tough to justify. I feel this is a great option for those looking for a wide angle zoom on a full frame camera… but as a walkabout zoom on an APS-C camera, I’m not sure this is the best option.

Have just gotten my first full frame camera and wanted a wide angle lens to go with my new camera, my crop frame wide angle lens sadly would not fit my new camera. I have always shot with canon cameras and canon L lens, but had now I have moved over to a Sony mirrorless a7ii full frame camera with a sigma mc-11 adapter. so I can still use all my canon lens, on my new camera and with this wide angle lens I can now shoot landscapes which is cool. The lens is well built true its second hand, but its as advertised and not a mark on it to show its been used, in fact its hard to believe its not a brand-new lens, its in that good a condition. and I would recommend using this seller to anyone and will use them again. The item came on time and is good value for the price and I am very happy I use this sellers services.
