What a lens. The IS helps a lot on this model if you like to wander round the garden (like me) and shoot hand held. Everything is smooth and creamy for macro, and pin sharp if you use it as a general prime lens. Probably one of the most versatile and best quality lens I have used, and I have a few L series lens for my 7D.

I’m an amateur user so my five star rating is based on the lens doing what I needed it to do and at a fair price, which is give me well-focused and exposed action shots of my daughters’ volleyball games in difficult indoor lighting using my Canon T3i. The gyms tend to be small to medium in size, so the 70-200 2.0 which is the go-to for sports photography would have been overkill, and too expensive for my purpose. After seeing some recommendations of this and the 85 mm f 2.0 as a suitable low-cost substitute for indoor sports in some conditions, I decided to give it a try. Works great – fast focus and the f. 2.0 is what I need in the cave lighting the games are played in. The focal length enables me to get most of the shots I want while shooting from the sidelines in fairly small gyms – this is not the solution for shooting from the stands in larger facilities. I switch to a 35mm f2 when I want a wider field of view. And on top of solving my volleyball problem I have a very nice portrait lens on top of that.

First of all ClickElectronics are wrong to group all canon 100mm usm together as there is a big price difference between the three versions and I don’t see a way of choosing the one I purchased . The superior one is l series and has IS . My budget at the time could not stretch to the more expensive one so I have the one without IS. Despite this it’s a great lens and i use it lots. Colours and details are fantastic . I wish I’d saved up for the more expensive one though but I’ll make good use for this now .
