I like prime lenses. They tend to be faster and sharper than zooms, often with a better image quality throughout the apertures, and I also find they force you to think about your composition more as you only have the fixed focal length to work with; if you want to get closer your legs become the zoom! I chose the 40mm 2.8 because of its compactness and, because I was on a crop sensor at the time (7D), I wanted a wider angle than the 50mm would have given.Really impressive lens for the price. Obviously not as versatile as a zoom, nor does it have as wide an aperture as the Canon 50mm 1.2, 1.4 or 1.8 lenses, but it makes a lovely, compact walk-around lens at a bargain price (at least when compared to the astronomical L series lenses), and it takes next to no space in you bag (I even carried it around in my pocket on several occasions).A great lens for moving on from a mediocre kit lens, or if you want a fast ‘n’ sharp lens that takes up a tiny amount of space in your gear.Note: These pics are years old and probably don’t do the lens justice.

Had the lens about a year now and fin fit to be excellent. Crisp clear pictures and quick to focus. I have also used it with extender rings with great results. The wide aperture is particularly useful. The thing I really like is its size. Being a pancake lens it makes the camera and lens easy to carry and a lot lighter. I found I quickly got use to the lack of zoom just changing where I stand instead.Ideal for taking pictures in galleries, museums and churches. My only complaint:- I bought a lens hood which was a bit pricey and I think really unnecessary. I use the lens with a skylight filter to protect it and don’t bother with the hood.A great little lens

Probably the best quality/price ratio you could get out of a lens.
