I traded in my big Nikon 500mm F4 and was worried that the new lens 1/3 the size and weight would not have such good image quality. It is in fact better and I can now as a retired person carry it on a Nikon 850 body all day and enjoy a day walking in a bird reserve. Auto focus and tracking focus is spot on and VR means you can shoot hand held at 1/40 sec provided the subject is not moving! I have been a professional advertising photographer all my working life so image quality is all important to me. I think there will be a lot of older bird photographers trading in the big lens for one of these. Also plus Nikons x1.4 extend you have a very compact 700mm lens with loss of one stop but even wide open at f8 image quality still 5 star.

Had to wait a long time to arrive.. Sent as cheaply as possible.. Tracking showed left for two weeks standing still in DHL’s warehouse in Germany.. Didn’t even have to sign for receipt of package.. I had nothing but problems with this lens from the start.. I’m assuming my lens is faulty.. When working incredibly sharp.. On the first day would not focus unless I focused elsewhere and recomposed often missing the subject I was trying to photograph.. Subsequently improved.. Birds in flight often miss focused against the sky and shots with a contrasting background was a waste of time.. Mark Smith the American wildlife photographer had the same issues with flight photography and sent it back.. My lens is in for repair.. This seller is from Germany and lens is sold with a 5 year warranty not valid in the UK.. For a lens in this price bracket a miserly one year guarantee is poor value..

This lens is amazing, super light and super sharp. I was very lucky to get one of these lenses due to the demand being so high. I did some comparative shots to the 80-400, 200-500, sigma 150-600 and sigma 500 f4 and the difference in sharpness was significantly better when using this lens even wide open. The only thing that would make this lens better was if it was an f4 or lower and for some reason I struggle to get the lens hood to fit in reverse. I dont think its that expensive for what you get, a light and super sharp ultra zoom. Ive taken it to Tanzania on safari and didnt notice much difference in sharpness compared to the 300 f2.8 which says quite a lot.
