I looked this up. I spent hours researching it. I really wanted this diverse, powerful, portable cross between a laptop and a tablet.Buyer beware. The processor CANNOT handle the coding of THOUSANDS of applications that its Predecessors could. It’s essentially a 32 bit operating system. All of the enjoyment you got from drawing is basically limited to windows paint 3d and whiteboard. Other programs are only slowly updating to ARM. Please look this up before spending the amount of money I did.Even whiteboard is constantly shutting down when I try to help my son with homework. It’s not a next generation. It predates windows 7. Many and by many, I mean almost all windows supported programs are not compatible. The same goes for current software that supports the surface.Example: Minecraft java edition : noYou have to check the Microsoft store before buying anything. Good news, if you do, they tell you it’s not compatible; the bad news it’s usually not. It’s imortant to note that it’s not all bad. The Bluetooth is great. The pen is fun for my 10 yr old. If all you’re doing is office work, it might be ok. By ok, I mean okay. The battery life is worse than any laptop or tablet I have ever owned. It helped my son through his day short day of homeschool (3 hours continuous run time with NOT continuous audio) and it was left only 1/3 of the battery life remaining.I am extremely upset by the amount of money I spent on this tablet. I feel bad even calling it that, because it didn’t even work with the many apps my Samsung tablet could use seamlessly.I just hope people read my review before buying this. I’d like to return it, but it’s an electronic device and I’m afraid of the restock price that brings to me. Maybe I’ll do an office space video on this horrible Microsoft migraine.Long story short: love Microsoft surface, buy a 7.

Research the processor before buying. The aesthetics are top notch. The battery beyond belief! That being said, I can run programs, with some notice of an overlay, or emulation, as others have put it. x64 install results in a missing program. THIS CANNOT RUN X64. Microsoft has promised a future work around so in the future x64 WILL RUN. does not mean there is a lack of software to support needs. I use sketchbook from autodesk 8.5.1 which was their last x32 support installer. Chrome runs, firefox runs, steam runs. Autocad? No, but im not an engineer, surface 7 can and its 300 – 500 bucks cheaper. I have an i9 monster hpc so power isnt the buying point, nor should it be for anyone, buying this computer. Its graphics are weaker than intel and nvidia. That being said youve been warned. The positives outway the cons. I love surfaces and the screen and drawing on this is beasty. It runs LoL, I dont play, haha. I run steam in home streaming from that hpc without any issue running on AC 5ghz. It runs what I need and does more than I ask. Cool for Microsoft to be building their own specialized chips, hence the cost!I draw and type notes in college with this amazingly beautiful and sleek machine. It does a lot more than a google tablet/android based craptab. Its certainly fun to use the slim pen. Add a protector and some protective cosmetic stickers and youll be loving it as much as I do.

Before anything, I must state that if you are looking for a laptop with full PC functionality, better look elsewhere. This thing is for portability, always connected and for being used as a tablet if you need a tablet on a regular basis.I won’t got into ARM processor and such, since I am not a hardware/software techie and there is a lot of info on the internet about it, I am reviewing this strictly under a user perspective and under my specific needs. I also won’t go into comparing it with Apple products since I prefer Windows (just in case, I am not implying that Windows is better than iOS). I will indeed compare it somehow with the Surface Pro 7 which I owned.Since I NEED a convertible because I need a tablet also, and I don’t do photo editing or play games, but instead I use it for MS Office tasks, internet browsing, JW apps, Zoom meetings and playing videos, I consider this a pretty good machine to own.Yes, it is expensive (although I bought it while Microsoft threw a discount on it) for what it sounds like, but I still find reasons to buy it again if this one gets lost or damaged. As a tablet is so much comfortable to handle than the Pro 7 because it doesn’t have the 7’s rough edges, this one is rounder and even though they both weight almost the same, the X is a lot more comfortable to handle, specially in portrait mode with one hand.It is really blazing fast on what it can do. It even seems to be faster than the Pro 7 while using the Microsoft Edge browser, and it seems as fast when using Office and others. Speaking about the new Edge browser it is very good now that has adopted a Chrome like using experience. I was a Chrome user and switched happily to Edge with no issues, maybe there could be something that I may be missing (perhaps on a more deep and technical analysis but as I said, I am not a tech guy in those aspects) but I am very happy with the new Edge and how fast it works with the Pro XSure there are a lot more of apps that it can not run but there are a few internet websites that can guide you with that.As far as battery life, while it obviously depends on usage and screen brightness, I think it easily doubles the Pro 7’s (which is by the way very bad), it can stand almost 8 hours of Zoom use before going out of juice. Charging is pretty fast, just 20 min of charging can get you an additional couple hours of battery life. The new pen works excellent, it is more comfortable than the previous one, and the ability to have it store within the keyboard while it also charges is an excellent plus.Keyboard is otherwise similar than the previous Surface line but I do find that the touchpad clicking sound of the X is notably louder and prefer the previous one on this regard.Screen is absolutely beautiful, it can get very bright if need to be used outside in the sun, and the touch is very responsiveThe only thing I need that this machine doesn’t have up to today, is compatibility with a good VPN app such as NordVPN or some of the sort but in the end to me it isn’t a deal breaker. I would have substracted half a star if possible because of this.Maybe it shouldn’t bare the name “Pro” as it may imply that can do tasks that “Pro” machines can do like photo editing, gaming and so, but like I said, if it fills the need you have for portability, it will surely make you happy. If many find “Surface Pro X” as misleading, think of it as “Surface X”.As for the price, as it works on many things like clothes, cars, etc, it will always depend on everyone’s budget but I didn’t find a SIMILAR machine I like with a Windows OS that was cheaper than this one.Being September and that it is almost likely that MS will bring a new line within the next weeks or just a few months, it could be wise to wait if you can until those arrive. It can even mean that you can get a good discount on this one if, again, it fills your needs.Hope this review helps anyone to decide to buy or to pass on this machine

Bought it as a secondary machine to both my work laptop and my desktop. And for that, it is perfect. If you can spend most of your time in a web browser, and want something ultra portable, this is definitely for you. The Verge even went so far as to say “Microsoft accidentally made the perfect Chromebook” haha. Now, if this is your ONLY device and you are not replacing a chromebook – I’d suggest a different device. If you wanted to stay in the Surface family, I’d suggest a Surface Laptop 3 although the battery life is not nearly as good. I’d probably suggest a Dell XPS or whatever the top rated laptop is at the moment.Battery life is great, ranges 7-8 hours with full brightness and watching a couple hours of netflix/streamed shows and a bunch of web surfing.Windows Hello works nicely. Video conferencing, apart from the kickstand angle, is nice too.If I traveled anymore, I’d be excited to bring this ultraportable device with me. It would be utterly perfect for it. Although I’d be bummed I’d likely have to bring a usb-c to headphone adapter. Or maybe I’d have to get BT headphones. After a month, I finally started to use the slim pen to do some whiteboard drawing in Google Jamboard – that worked pretty well too. The hide-away slot is crucial because I have lost the pen to my work laptop already so the rare times I want to use it, I want to have it handy. Plus I like how it is not sticking out the side of the device.Minor complaints / things to improve- Include a headphone jack- Have one USB-C port on each side of the device- Stiffen up the surface keyboard near the esc and delete keys (it has a different connection than previous surface type covers.)- More colors for the type covers, or perhaps backwards compatibility with other type covers- ideal video conferencing angles are hard to get with the kickstand

Good looking hardware, competent internals but the software compatibility is an issue.I planned to use as a travel/work laptop but SO MANY programs are not compatible with the mobile chip. Shame, because it really is the best looking convertible on the market with a great screen and decent battery life.
